Remedy Types and Administration

Here, we cover the different types of homeopathic remedies available and how to administer them

Remedy Types

You can purchase homeopathic remedies in a variety of forms. The most common are small 3mm diameter pills. These are referred to as pillules or sometimes globules.

They can come in different sizes. Some pharmacies make them much bigger to mimic the drugs. I like the very small sugar grain size especially for cats.

The remedy is carried in a lactose or sucrose medium, which acts as a preservative.

You can also purchase the remedies in liquid form. Usually the vial comes with a dropper for easy administration. The liquid remedies are carried in an alcohol solution to act as a preservative.

I have found that most animals don’t care about the medium, even the alcohol, provided the remedy is appropriate.

Administration

In extreme emergencies, you just want to get the remedy/ies in, even if you’re not sure it’s the right one.

If the situation isn’t too dire, then it’s best to get the co-operation of the animal (see ‘listening’ section).

For cats and dogs, the least invasive way to administer the remedies is to lift up a lip and tip or drip the remedy onto a gum. You can be quick and deft, without disturbing them unduly.

Sometimes, they will lap the remedy off the proffered dropper or syringe (without the needle). Or you can squirt that at their lips, causing them to lick it up. Only use a couple of drops, as the noise of more will put them off the next dose.

For horses, you can pour a few pillules into your cupped hand and the horse will likely lick them off. Or you can drop or drip the remedy into the side of the mouth, by pulling back a lower lip. Horses often do a flehmen’s gesture after taking a remedy. Some cats do that, too. I take that as approval!

In circumstances where the mouth is painful (such as with inflammation or a mouth injury), it’s best to avoid oral administration. Then you can drip a couple of drops onto the head. The aura will pick that up. Or add to the food or water, if they are eating or drinking.

If you only have pillules, then add a few to a little water and use the water in the same way as the liquid.
