Why this course, who is it for, what you need to know, the human aspect.
Pain generally doesn’t appear on its own. There is a reason for pain, such as an injury, a bite, a burn, etc. So think about what happened before the onset of the apparent pain. Don’t automatically assume there is pain just because there is distress or vocalisation. Animals are much more likely to suffer from stress than pain.
Cats and dogs rarely have problems with painful teeth when they have raw bones to crunch on that keep them pearly white and free of tartar. Most animals don't seem to have problems with bad teeth when they are naturally reared and fed.
If a tooth does die, they seem to be able to eject it without any trouble.
So if the mouth is sore (apart from the chronic condition of stomatitis or gingivitis which needs ongoing professional homeopathic treatment) any mouth pain is likely to be from an abscess. Check the bite section.
The animal will indicate where the pain is by licking or scratching the area. Or they may be very tender to you touching either the area or in general. A warning snap or growl, flattened ears in horses, or a bite if they are in extreme pain. Don’t take it personally. Use that to decide on the most appropriate remedy.
Ear itch or pain is a common allergy from vaccines (see relevant section). Mites can cause an itch. A few drops of a good olive oil in the ears helps to soothe the ear and kill the mites.
Although unpleasant, these are generally not emergencies.
This condition is mostly found in painful mouths, be it a tooth abscess, inflamed gums or mucosa, a sharp object stuck, after ingesting poison, a bee or wasp sting, etc. Try to work out what it could be then go to the relevant section.
Cats and dogs don’t seem to have issues with rotting teeth. If they get one, they seem to fall out on their own without issue.
A chronic condition such as stomatitis or gingivitis will come on slowly, although you might miss the early signs. This requires skilled, ongoing support.
My horses water trough is under the shade of a tree whose flowers attract bees. The bees fall into the water. I float a couple of sticks in the water so the bees can climb onto them, rather than sting my horses muzzles or mouths.
I had emailed you a few yrs ago about an emergency I had with my 7yrd-old cat where he was foaming from mouth and having problem breathing unless his head was allowed to remain level to the floor and not elevated to where the foam would obstruct him being able to breath from either mouth or nose. I informed vet about the problem and they insisted on grasping the back of his neck and pulling his head elevated and I didn't think I had time to take him 6miles to another vet and within 5mins they ended up killing him and thought it wise to charge me $45 for their services.
I believed that he had been stung in mouth by a bee since he was always chasing them and thought they would inspect and apply treatment to resolve the swelling but she did neither and just started shooting him up with a diuretic lasix injection which she did 3xs before he died.
