This lesson includes information about inflammations, fevers and infections
If an infection comes on suddenly and it isn’t a result of an accident, injury, shock or trauma, then it is most likely a result of a chronic condition.
As explained in the first module, if your animal:
then you know their immune system is not functioning properly and maybe unable to support them through whatever comes along.
A really common problem with cats is the numerous urinary tract infections they suffer with when their diet contains kibble, the dreadful dry ‘food’.
Most often you will have some warning days even weeks before. Your cat will be straining to urinate, will only be able to pass small amounts, will make numerous attempts. Often there will be blood in the urine.
The remedy Cantharis is the first remedy of choice for this condition. Four doses of the 30c in an hour should allow successful urination. Repeated doses less often may be needed.
This may also support healing when they are completely unable to urinate. However, you must be very watchful. If there is no progress within an hour or so, then this is serious and may need emergency treatment.
Just be aware that some of the drugs vets use for this condition can be fatal. They seem to have no idea.
Acute inflammation is the body’s natural reaction to any injury. Swelling surrounds the part preventing much movement and promoting rest. This is exactly what’s needed. Anti-inflammatory drugs prevent the body doing an efficient job, slowing healing.

I have come across some cats, usually stray or feral who are generally under nourished and weak, who have a severe digestive issue. The stomach is inflamed. There is a burning thirst, but an aversion to drinking. They keep going back to drink, but then can’t. They can’t eat either. There may be violent retching and vomiting with constant urging to urinate and maybe defecate, which may be diarrhoea. There is great sensitivity to touching over the stomach, whilst pressure can induce convulsions.
Cantharis is indicated here.
Fevers, which are consistently elevated temperatures, accompany other pathology. Fevers are very much part of youth, where the immature immune system is getting in some practice. They are healthy and should generally be left alone, just monitored.
Suppressing a fever, especially in a youngster, with drugs is destroying the efficacy of the immune system. This inevitably leads to chronic, serious and auto-immune problems in adult life.
Some drugs can cause fevers, as can heat stroke, dehydration, inflammation and infection.
So you want to try to consider what the cause is before jumping into action. Check the relevant section.
Whilst cats and dogs can't sweat, they may pant, have damp paw pads and elevated breathing rate. Horses will sweat. They can all feel hot.
The ears are a good indication of how they feel. Cold ears can mean they're too cold, as hot ears can mean they're too hot. But hot ears can also mean a fever., if accompanied by other signs and symptoms.
Apart from the elevated temperature and perhaps breathing rate, there is often fatigue. And the body may feel hot even through the fur.
When there is a hot fever, when the body feels like a radiator, then Belladonna is indicated. This wonderful remedy can prevent the temperature rising into dangerous levels where hallucinations occur.
When there is a fever without the heat, Aconite is indicated.
These remedies will support the immune system to grow stronger, rather than weakening it as drugs do
