Tendon and ligament injuries can happen to anyone who moves. Certainly, it’s more likely to happen to those who are engaged in sporting activities, simply because they move more and faster. However, they are also more likely to know the pitfalls and take greater care.
Those of us who aren’t into sports, but may have some heavy work to carry out (think delivery people, farmers, small holders, gardeners, pleasure riders, etc) are possibly more prone to these types, or any other type, of injury.
This could be because we don’t necessarily warm up our muscles before using them. We just get stuck into what needs to be done.
Dogs are also prone to ligament injuries in their hind legs (their cruciate ligament). This is mainly from twisting and turning chasing balls or toys thrown. Warming up first or limiting this activity can avoid the problem.
Horses also suffer from typically tendon injuries as they are often exercised fast.
They are soft tissue structures known as connective tissue. The tendons connect muscle to bone. The ligament connect bone to bone. Tendons allow joints to move. Ligaments stabilise joints.
Examples of tendons are the Achilles tendon that connects the calf muscle to the heel bone, and the rotator cuff that allow the shoulder to rotate back and forth.
Examples of ligaments are the four that criss-croos in the knee, to stabilise it. And the wrist.
They work in similar ways.
Both ligaments and tendons are strong flexible tissue that stretch.
Injuries can occur when the joint is bent into an unnatural position. An example would be twisting an ankle or falling forward onto outstretched hands.
Another example is when the joint is overworked. This can cause inflammation, which is the body’s way of telling you to quit what you’re doing and rest the joint.
Natural inflammation contributes to faster healing and should not be suppressed with anti-inflammatory drugs.
A third example could be from an accident or injury that involves a larger area, such as a compound fracture. Then the muscles, nerves, tendon, ligaments as well as the bone are likely to be damaged.
Intensity of injury will vary, from a mild sprain, which is more like bruising, to tearing of the structure.
These will vary according to the damage done, the cause and the extent of the injury. Past injuries in the same area will also tend to exacerbate the current injury, as it probably wasn’t healed energetically, leaving a cell memory.
Inflammation, such as tendonitis, normally means pain, swelling and stiffness all worse on moving the joint. The skin may look bruised. Moving the joint/s exacerbate the symptoms.
Relief from pain generally comes with immobilising the joint or resting.
Any joint can be affected, but typical areas are upper and lower limbs and the spine.
If it’s only the tendon or ligament that has been damaged, pain, swelling and stiffness may be absent, but the joint is weak. If it’s the upper limbs, it may be difficult to undo jars. You may find you drop things from your hands.
If it’s the lower limbs, you may find you stumble more or one leg collapses a little as you walk.
The area may have a slight discomfort, indicationg the site of the problem.
Tendon and ligaments don’t have pain receptors because they are well inside the body
Most people will take medical drugs to reduce the pain. This doesn’t support the body’s best efforts to heal and it can lead to a chronic weakness of the joint.
Severe issues may need surgery. For example, a broken bone does need lining up and immobilising while it heals.
However, for all tendon and ligament injuries, the homeopathic approach to the treatment means a faster recovery time, often immediate relief (depending on the extent of the injury) and no surgery.
Homeopathic treatment supports the best efforts of your body, which has an innate ability to heal itself.
It’s also very much kinder on your bank balance. One or two consultations are normally required, the cost of which pales into insignificance compared with surgery.
Faster and complete healing on its own is a major win. Low cost and it becomes a no brainer. And who wants to undergo surgery if you don’t have to?,
