Back injuries and the associated pain can be terribly debilitating. The back supports the whole body, so when it's troubled, it can be difficult to lead a normal life.

Our backs tends to take a hammering from daily life, from bad posture to old beds, from sitting in a vehicle too long, to lifting heavy items inappropriately, to sporting injuries, to accidents.

The vast majority of back injuries are caused to the soft tissue (muscles or tendons). When you sit in a car or vehicle too long, you overstrain your back muscles, as it tries to support you in an unnatural position. If you do too much lifting, you can see you have over strained your supporting back muscles.

It is this stressed soft tissue that can pull a vertebra out of alignment, causing it to impinge on the nervous column, and the result can be sciatica or a similar nerve response.

Other back injuries can include damage to the spinal column itself, to the vertebrae. These are less common as they would result from a serious accident or impact.

Most back injuries are not necessarily something that happens suddenly. Over the years when strains are not healed dynamically, they can create a weakness. Then, it doesn't take much to tip the problem into something major. Your body can only take so much.
