Understanding Appendicitis

What it is and how to prevent and heal it

Madeleine Innocent

Understanding appendicitis is key to treating it holistically. You could say, why bother, as the removal of the appendix is quick, easy and solves the pain problem. While that is true, there is a lot more to the story than meets the eye.

The appendix does have a valuable purpose, that is not understood by current medicine. Removing it does have less rewarding long term consequences.

What is Appendicitis?

The signs of appendicitis is pain in the lower abdomen, on the right side. Depending on the individual and the circumstances, the pain can be so severe that the patient finds the best way to avoid it is to lie perfectly still.

This often creates fear, if not in the sufferer themselves, in the attendant family members. A rush to emergency and the system will respond with urgency.

The claim is that the appendix, a useless organ in medical eyes, is inflamed and diseased. Neither is true. The pain, however, is very real.

The medical urgency is a result of the possibility of death from the condition. In fact, the fatality of appendicitis is very often magnified. It is, in fact, significantly low, at about 0.30-0.40%. And even this figure is not entirely accurate. Many MDs, even surgeons, consider the death rate is the result of the surgery not the condition itself.

Understanding Appendicitis - What it really is

Ulric Williams was a New Zealand MD and surgeon who became a naturopath. This means he had a wide experience in the medical field and could see long term results. What he discovered was not that the appendixes were diseased. In fact he claimed that 85% of those removed were perfectly healthy. And of the remaining 15%, he advised were best left alone.

Many other MDs are concurring with this statement. Dr Charles Mayo, co-founder of the Mayo Clinic, claimed that 90% of operations could be dispensed with.

As with so many 'diseases', appendicitis is the body's response to a problem that has been ignored. The body always gives minor indications before it gets to a severe one.

What were the ignored indications? Mostly they were signs of constipation.

Constipation occurs with a poor diet. The consumption of ultra processed food, white flour, white sugar, white rice and animal protein all impair healthy digestion. A diet high in a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables leads to regular and healthy bowel movements.

The Consequences of A Poor Diet

It's easy to understand why the ultra processed foods causes constipation. They all lack the healthy fibre from the natural sources of food. They have all been highly processed, which is well known to reduce nutrient quality. They all have added problem foods in high amounts - oils, fats, salt, white sugar - to increase taste.

However, why does animal protein cause constipation? A true carnivore, such as cats and polar bears, have short intestines as they are perfectly designed to process raw meat quickly. As meat has virtually no fibre, bowel movements are infrequent. This is normal and healthy in a carnivore.

Humans have long intestines. These are needed to process the complex carbohydrates of plant food.

When humans consume animal protein, the long, and warm, intestines are the perfect conditions leading to putrefaction and fermentation. Not only does this lead to stagnation, and so constipation, it also produces toxins.

The work of the appendix is to rectify this condition. However, it can become overworked purely from a poor diet. This leads to swelling and pain.

The accompanying bacteria created by the body is not detrimental to the process. They are produced to help deal with the toxins, to make them easier for the body to eliminate naturally.

The treatment that Williams and others recommended was to fast and rest. This allows the body to complete what it started without adding in any other potential hazards. It's logical. And it works. But it can take a little time.

The homeopathic solution is kinder, more gentle and faster. This is not a 'one size fits all' approach. It considers the patient's overall condition and is specific to them.

The Consequences of Living Without an Appendix

It has been established that the appendix acts as a moderator to a poor diet. It helps stagnating ingesta to keep moving through the intestines. It helps to turn the toxins from putrfying meat into harmless substances that can be eliminated easily.

Without these natural and essential processes, it is likely there will be more digestive issues, more toxins, unless the diet is cleaned up considerably.

Understanding appendicitis can ensure you never have to deal with it yourself. And if the organ has already been removed, what you need to do to remain healthy and free from digestive issues. As Williams observed, appendicitis never occurs in people or nations who eat wisely.
